On February 20, 2004, at the Sun Sky Room in Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, the 8th Manager Seminar was held for manager class employees of member companies, with about 110 persons attending.
The seminar consisted of two lectures on the theme of “corporate ethics” and recognition of related initiatives was shared between members.

Lectures

Mr. Ishikawa

Mr. Machida, Secretary-General, NSnet, gave an opening address, followed by an activities report by Mr. Tanaka, General Manager of Safety Department, NSnet. Masayuki Ishikawa, group manager of Corporate Ethics at TEPCO gave a lecture entitled “Initiatives Related to Observing Corporate Ethics at TEPCO”. The lecture covered corporate ethics management that TEPCO is striving for, programs for observing corporate ethics, activities to establish corporate ethics and a corporate ethics consultation desk that is broader and more open. In the lecture, he talked about:

Conduct standards concerning the observance of corporate ethics were established last year in March, however, these are considered not “goals”, but “starts”, after which TEPCO has been pouring efforts into established.

Crucial to establishment of corporate ethics is continuing with them. It is also important that many more people participate in this issue with interest.

It is also important to provide solid feedback to each workplace, which in turn is important for monitoring the establishment status of corporate ethics. He explained and gave concrete examples of initiatives.

Mr. Okada

Next, Yoshio Okada, General Manager of the Compliance Department, Snow Brand Milk Products gave a lecture entitled “Initiatives of the ‘New Snow Brand Milk Products’?Aiming to Raise Consciousness and Reform Activities Person by Person”. The lecture covered corporate principles, the circumstances of establishing conduct standards and activities to establish conduct standards.
In the lecture, he talked about:

As a part of corporate ethics, thoroughly recognizing inappropriate acts and having all employees never forgetting or waver in their principles.

When various problems arise, there is the weight of responsibility for such problems that have occurred, but responsibility towards responding to the results is also extremely important.

There is an opinion that “up to now, awareness is strong that consumers and companies are in a hostile relationship, however, clearly there are also consumers who want to become partners. I hope that companies will take initiatives so as to become good partners.” Mr. Okada expressed his desire to face customers directly. He also explained company reforms in detail.

After the presentations, a survey was conducted and various opinions received such as those below.

Lecture by Mr. Ishikawa, TEPCO

I was recognized once again the necessity of initiatives by executive management, such as the chairman and president, for long-term initiatives that don’t simply end with an “event”.

“Ethics” is important, but most important is how it is developed and how it will be continued.

Lecture by Mr. Okada , Snow Milk Brand Products

That corporate ethics (conduct) standards should not be top-down but made by all company employees and that the standards haven’t penetrated the company until employees recognize the standards as their own was useful.

I was able to understand the difficulty of sales being immediately linked to customer reactions in the foodstuffs industry compared to the power industry.
