Safety Presentation

Safety Presentation

Mr. Hishiyama

About 60 employees of JNFL were attended the safety lecture presenteation.

At the beginning of the Presentation, Mr. Inomata, Vice President of JNFL, gave speech and said, "In July 2000, NSnet’s first Safety Caravan was held in our company. During the subsequent three and a half years, various problems had occurred, such as manipulation of inspection data at the nuclear power stations and defective welding at the spent fuel storage pool of our reprocessing facilities. Each of these problems are deeply concerned with our operations, we have been implementing improvements, such as strengthening corporate ethics and incorporating the involvement of the top management into the quality assurance system. At today’s safety lecture and safety information exchange session, we expect to obtain useful information about corporate ethics and so forth. Such information will be incorporated into our business to produce significant results."

After the speech, Mr. Machida, General Manager of NSnet, introduced NSnet activities, and this was followed by a lecture entitled "Corporate ethics let’s reexamine the fundamental core of corporate activity" by Mr. Takaji Hishiyama, Principal of Center for Corporate Behavior
During the lecture he stressed the importance of implementing ethics and compliance saying that, "Why do not companies learn from such a number of corporate scandals? Scandals can not be covered up. Scandals result in painful consequences when they are discovered. Companies are forced to cease to exist if they are serious. Scandals happen as the result of mere shortsighted, easy thinking. Wrongdoers may think this is the best selection on behalf of profit of company or workplace." It turns into the worst for the organization as a whole if he or she lacks values and ethical checks. Values-driven ethics and compliance are a must. No business can be sustained unless it is trusted by society. It is now necessary for the top management, including executive officers, to show "how serious attention they are paying to corporate ethics." It is essential for the top management to exhibit their high values and leadership throughout the corporation."

Safety information exchange session

At the safety information exchange session, we asked Mr. Suzuki, Department Manager, Nuclear Quality Assurance, Division Nuclear Systems Division Power & Industrial Systems Hitachi office Hitachi, Ltd. to give an in-depth explanation about the good practices cited by the peer review of the Hitachi, Ltd regarding "the leadership of the top management and the practice of two-way communication with employees."

The main information and opinions exchanged were:

-
Young employees announced the "results of identifying issues faced by the organization or by themselves and the actions they have taken to solve them." Can we expect the Director of the Business Division to explain the activities for strengthening business structures in such areas as "managerial environment, managerial policy, promoting compliance, improving quality and safety, and engineering abilities" on the same day?
-
The presentation is made on the same day, so that it serves as a forum for two-way communication between the Director of the Business Division and young employees. The policy of the Director of the Business Division is also communicated via other department and general managers, and the subjects of presentation delivered by young employees are also linked to the policy of the Director of the Business Division. Specific subjects presented by young employees in the previous presentation include: "Practicing Market-Driven Activities," "Toward Becoming the World's Best Nuclear Manufacturer," "Achieving Improvements in Product Quality," and so forth.
-
Could you show us some of the activities carried out throughout Hitachi and within the Business Division using the practices introduced today.
-

The policy of the Director of the Division is explained in every division. The Six Sigma activities (activities to implement a unified strategy in solving issues faced by the Nuclear Power Division) are not carried out by all divisions. Young engineers' forums are organized in various ways in each division.

-
With regard to "Executive Online" (suggestion box for opinions and ideas), isn't it likely that those who express frank opinions might be discriminated against?
-
Such instances have never been heard of. Contributors can choose from among several methods of online communication. In addition to President, Group Leaders, and Division Directors Online, there is also online communication regarding compliance. Basically, it is desirable to create a workplace that facilitates smooth communication to grasp and solve problems in the workplace.
