Safety Presentation

Safety Presentation

Ms. Tezuka

About 30 persons, including the employees of Naka Research Center and cooperating companies, attended the Safety Presentation.

At the beginning of the Presentation, Dr. Ishihara, General manager, Central Research Institute Naka Research Center, Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, gave an address and said, "We now live in an age of science and technology, and there has never been a more crucial time than now for scientists and engineers to consider what their role in the world is. Today, let us engage in spirited debate."

After the address, Mr. Tanaka, General Manager of NSnet, introduced NSnet activities, and this was followed by a lecture entitled "The Ethics of Engineers and the Survival of Companies" delivered by Mr. Tezuka, Human resource Management Institute, Nippon Consultants Group Inc.
In the lecture, he said, "What is at question is the form ethical standards should take, based on a business environment subject to current international free competition and on in-house structures without external constraints brought about by restrictions similar to past ones. Also at question is how the engineers themselves who are involved should maintain their sense of ethics. I will introduce a few actual cases of different recall methods companies have taken in the automobile industry under this situation."

Safety information exchange session

(1) Introduction of Good Practices and Exchange of Opinions
At the safety information exchange session, we asked Mr. Wakashima, Senior Chief Researcher, Manager, Administration Department, Nippon Nuclear Fuel Development Co., Ltd. to give an in-depth explanation about the good practices cited by the peer review of the Nippon Nuclear Fuel Development Co., Ltd. regarding "Increasing Training Levels by Analyzing and Evaluating Unsigned Questionnaires during Training".

The main information and opinions exchanged were:

-
How are post-training questionnaire results and wishes being disclosed to employees.
-
Graphs of tabulated results and so on are distributed to executive employees only. We would like to consider preparing a Performance Indicator (PI) on trends for level of understanding and posting on electronic bulletin boards on the in-house network.
-
Why are the questionnaires unsigned.
-
The idea is so that anyone can give their opinion without holding back.
-
Having the questionnaires signed places responsibility with the respondents, so wouldn't that be a better idea.
-
Also, the questionnaire results, if not returned, will diminish the trust respondents have in the questionnaires, so I think it's a good idea to have some kind of response.
-
How are training materials revised.
-
Three members or so responsible for the Safety Control Department are put in charge, who carry out revision work by field.

(2) Introduction of Safety Culture Cultivation Activities
Next, Mitsubishi Materials Corporation introduced its risk management structure for its whole corporate group, basic policies, and important implementation items as well as its safety management initiatives at the Naka Research Center.

(3) Introduction of Other Information and Exchange of Opinions
Finally, NSnet introduced overseas and domestic cases on the means to let everybody know the business ethics and engineer ethics, and the information database being made public on its Website. Opinions and information were also exchanged concerning other Nsnet activities in general.
