The 6th Managers' Seminar was held on March 5, 2003, with the participation of managers from member organizations, at the Asahi Tokai Bldg., located in Ote-machi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
About 100 people participated, with lectures concerning safety management in the medical treatment industry, introductions of good practices from NSnet peer reviews and discussions and sharing between members regarding the safety climate and safety culture development activities.

After greetings by Mr. Umezu, Secretary-General, NSnet, and an activities report by Mr. Tanaka, General Manager of the Safety Department, NSnet, Dr. Makino, Vice President for Special Affairs, Kameda Medical Center gave a presentation entitled "Clinical Evaluation Indicators in the Medical Field" concerning safety management in medicine as an advanced initiative to improve the safety in industries other than nuclear power.

The presentations used the clinical indicators concerning the progress and results of medical treatment used as one of the hospital medical treatment methods in the experience of the Kameda General Hospital. It is the only hospital participating from Japan in the project of the Maryland Hospital Association, the largest scale medical treatment evaluation organization in the U.S. Not only results with other hospitals were compared but why they came about was reviewed and what was necessary to improve the quality of treatment was also explained.

Introduction of good practices of
peer-review and panel discussion

After the presentations, two member organizations -Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. and Hitachi Ltd.- introduced good practices discovered in the peer reviews conducted at each of their operations.
The examples included "developing a safety-conscious culture by effective operations of performance indicators"; "effective work management through utilizing the BSC system and performance indicators" and so on. After the introduction, a discussion for the exchange of opinions was held among the venue participants.
