On 17th October 2002, the 43rd Safety Caravan visit was held at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc., located in Futaba-gun, Fukushima Prefecture.

Safety Presentation

Safety Presentation

About 80 persons, including the employees of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and cooperating companies, attended the Safety Presentation.
At the beginning of the Presentation, Mr. Matsumura, Superintendent, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, gave an address and said "We are sorry that the scandal has given you a lot of trouble. We are looking forward to today's speech about attitudes toward safety and quality assurance at such a time when our safety culture is being disturbed."

After the address, Mr. Umezu, Secretary-General of NSnet, introduced NSnet activities, and this was followed by a lecture entitled "Nuclear Safety Preparedness" delivered by Dr. Itakura, former supreme adviser of Japan Atomic Power Co., Ltd.
In the lecture, he mentioned the importance of fundamental awareness, as a person engaging in nuclear power, that nuclear power is potentially dangerous and the necessity of acquiring fundamental education regarding nuclear power. On the other hand, he encouraged us to proudly perform our duties because engaging in nuclear power contributes to society.

Subsequently, Mr. Okada, General Manager of the Quality Assurance Dept., Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel Co., Ltd., gave a lecture entitled "Nuclear Fuel Quality Assurance Activities at Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel Co., Ltd."
In the Lecture, he gave an in-depth explanation starting from ways to develop human resources to activities for product quality assurance at Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel Co., Ltd.

Safety information exchange session

At the safety information exchange session, we asked Mr. Kudo, Deputy Manager of the Quality Assurance Dept., Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. to give an in-depth explanation about the 17 good practices cited by the peer review of Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. He also said, "The best practice at Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. is, I think, the rehabilitation from the great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake. If TEPCO is able to overcome this situation, it will serve as a great power in the future.

The main information and opinions exchanged were:
- Among your activities regarding corporate ethics, what is mock learning like?
- It is a half-day or whole-day hands-on leaning program.
- Are mental aspects considered in relation to becoming "executive advisory engineer (the highest rank in terms of expertise)" and "Hanshi (grand master) (the highest rank in terms of skills)"?
- Not only techniques and skills, but also personality is considered. There is only one executive advisory engineer in the department of nuclear power.
