The 5th Managers' Seminar was held from August 22 to 23, 2002, garnering the participation of about 110 managers from member organizations, at the Asahi Tokai Bldg., which is located in Ote-machi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, among other locations.
The first day of the seminar included presentations related to human error and contained introductions of information about good practices of peer review. The second day comprised a tour of the facilities of the Kunitachi Institute, Railway Technical Research Institute.

At first, Mr. Tanaka, General Manager of the NSnet Safety Department, gave a report on related activities, following which Mr. Shinomiya, General Manager of Human Science Division, Railway Technical Research Institute, gave a talk titled "A humanistic approach to railway safety," lecturing about the efforts in the railway industry toward improving safety.

At the presentations, there were detailed talks about the efforts, including
- "Measures to prevent human error";
- "Measures to prevent rail-crossing accidents and accidents involving bodily injury"; and
- "Measures for reducing damage from accidents."

Introduction of good practices of
peer-review and panel discussion

After the presentations, three member organizations -Shikoku Electric Power Co., Inc., Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., and Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute - introduced good practices discovered in the peer reviews conducted at each of their operations.
The examples included "discovery of measures against human error through "zero-accident activities" in which all staff participate"; "Sharing risk consciousness by uncovering risks and focusing on important phenomena"; "Proactive activities for preventing accidents involving fires or explosives with a focus on on-site consciousness through HAZOP," and so on. After the introduction, a discussion for the exchange of opinions was held among the venue participants.
