Lectures

Mr. Glenn M. Light
At the presentations:
Mr. Light talked about the results of a study of the situation surrounding ethics programs conducted at representative companies of U.S. industries, such as Boeing Company and Lockheed-Martin Corporation, and the like, as well as nuclear power related companies, and the effectiveness of such programs, among other topics.
"In all the companies, the corporate culture supported the ethics programs, and it is believed that the corporate culture was created based on the foundation of the active support of top management. For example, 'an environment in which any employee can feel confident in raising internal problems.'"
He also said, "In all companies we studied, the employees feel positively about the effectiveness of the corporate ethics programs, and the companies as well believed that the ethics programs were a success."

Mr. Reid
Mr. Reid, on the other hand, spoke of the efforts of Texas Instruments Incorporated with regard to corporate ethics, such as the history of corporate ethics at the company, details of that company's corporate ethics program, and the role of leaders in implementing such programs effectively, and so on.
He mentioned that "TI conveys an ethics message, which reads, 'Integrity is important in corporate activities and all decision-making processes. It is fostered in an environment based on clear expectations, transparent actions and accurate recognition.' The company instructs its employees to 'always have integrity.'"
"In making the ethics programs effective, someone, a 'cheerleader,' takes the lead in enacting the corporate ethics, frequently speaks to employees about "TI values," and creates an environment in which those values are etched into the minds of the staff members. In addition, to all employees, the company says to 'always be sensitive' to ethics issues. In other words, this means always being interested in ethics issues, making judgments regarding whether or not actions are appropriate."

Introduction of good examples of peer-review and panel discussion

Introduction
After the presentations, three member organizations - Shikoku Electric Power Co., Inc., Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited, and the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute - introduced good examples discovered in the peer reviews conducted at each of their operations. The examples included "Promotion of 'Ikata Net 21' activities including cooperating companies" (Shikoku Electric Power); "Convening staff through the use of personal computers at times of emergency and efforts to create a notification system" (Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited); "Securing safety at nuclear power plants through the Tokai NOA" (the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute), and so on. After the introduction, a discussion for the exchange of opinions was held among the venue participants.
