The 2nd Managers' Seminar was held on March 9, 2001, at the Otemachi Asahi Tokai Building, in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, targeting the management class of member facilities and garnering the attendance of about 100 managers. The seminar meeting included a lecture from an operator of an overseas nuclear power facility and a lecture about the situation of safety and crisis management in a different industry, topics that were requested by many members.

Following an initial activity report from the NSnet, Mr. Chris J. Monetta, Manager of GE's NE EHS (GE Nuclear Energy Environmental, Health and Safety Department) gave a lecture titled "Safety management activities at the GNF Wilmington Plant" as a representative of an overseas nuclear power facility operator. In addition, Mr. Kunio Takekawa, Manager of the Safety, Health and Environmental Group of the chemical company DUPONT, provided a lecture titled "The safety culture at DUPONT."

In his lecture Mr. Monetta introduced safety management activities at his company's Wilmington Plant, such as its safety management system, methods for evaluating contents of safety activities, and the education and training of employees in this regard, among other items.


Mr. Kunio Takekawa from DUPONT

Mr. Takekawa, on the other hand, provided an explanation about comprehensive risk management and responsible care in the chemical industry, DUPONT's safety culture, and STOP (safety training observation program).

After the lectures, there were many questions from the participants to both of the lecturers, such as inquiries about problems in terms of fostering a safety culture, details of the peer review process in the chemical industry, and others.

Following the lectures were explanations of the current status of safety promotion activities from three companies acting as representative of our members - Kyushu Electric Power Co. Inc., Hitachi, Ltd., and Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited. There was then an active exchange of opinions between the speakers and the participants about PA activities vis-a-vis local people, information exchange activities with local governments, and staff training and education, as well as other issues.
