Discussion session

At the discussion session, NSnet presented outlines of their Peer Reviews, web site for members and safety training materials. The Hitachi Administrative Division introduced its safety management activities, including nuclear power quality assurance, safety and reliability improvement activities, and lessons learned from accidents and incidents. Following this, there was a discussion on safety activities between Hitachi and NSnet.

The safety presentation following the discussion session was attended by approximately 180 employees from the Hitachi Administrative Division and other related companies involved.

Following a presentation by NSnet on its activities, the lecturer of the Japan Atomic Power Company, gave a presentation on Safety Culture for nuclear power entitled "Awareness of the 'nuclear power Safety Culture' as workers in the nuclear power industry." It included such topics as "Outline of the JCO accident," "Media coverage in the year following the JCO accident," and "Lessons from the Chernobyl reactor accident."
In his presentation,he drew on his extensive experience with nuclear power, making the following comments: "Nuclear power Safety Culture is the key to managing safety assurance, fostering ethics and morals, stimulating safety awareness, promoting improvement plans, and passing on accumulated experience and knowledge to the next generation. It is therefore important for industry to establish regulations and standards, and to earn the trust of the general public by sharing its safety ideology.

 

Next lecturer of the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute, gave a presentation entitled "Safety management at cycle facilities." It covered topics concerning safety management at the Tokai plant, including the organization of the plant, work characteristics and irradiation management, criticality management, and emergency measures.
The presentation included explanations of actual safety management, such as the particular features of safety management at plutonium handling plants, the special characteristics of and prevention measures for criticality accidents, emergency measures in the event of accidents, and emergency equipment. It also described the support system in the event of nuclear power accidents built by the Institute.
