8th Safety Caravan was held on October 25, 2000 at the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., Research and Development Center, Energy and Environmental Division.

The safety presentation was attended by approximately 40 employees from the Research and Development Center.

Following an introduction to the activities of NSnet, The lecturer of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, gave a presentation entitled "The safety of and disaster measures for cycle plants."
The presentation described past incidents at fuel cycle plants, including the Tomsk 7 explosion, the Hanford explosion, and the former PNC, at present Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute asphalt solidifying plant fire and explosion, which the lecturer had himself investigated. The causes of the accidents were discussed, together with the lessons that have been learned from them.

In the discussion session that followed the safety presentation, NSnet introduced its web site for members and safety training materials, and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd.introduced new safety activities incorporating lessons learned from the JCO accident. Opinions were then exchanged on the subject of nuclear power safety.
