Dr. Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, Chairman of the Science Council of Japan

The first NSnet seminar, the Executive Seminar, was held on April 6, 2000 at the Keidanren Bldg.in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

The guest speakers featured were Professor Shunsuke Kondo from the University of Tokyo, and Dr. Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, chairman of the Science Council of Japan. The seminar was attended by approximately 100 managers and directors.

Professor Kondo's presentation on the basic philosophy behind ensuring nuclear-reactor safety discussed the contributions of personnel to ensuring safety and Probabilistic Safety Assessment.

Dr. Yoshikawa spoke on the report issued by the Uranium Reprocessing Plant Criticality Accident Investigation Committee, focusing primarily on the background of the accident.

Positive comments were made by members, including those who expressed the desire to incorporate the ideas discussed at the seminar into the safety-oriented activities of NSnet and individual members. NSnet plans to hold regular Executive Seminars, as well as seminars and symposia aimed at various levels of management, in the future.
