Q-11 No equipment was installed for mitigating a hydrogen explosion in case it occurred. Why was this not taken into account? Was it an issue of cost efficiency ?

A:

As a measure to counter the buildup of hydrogen gas during an accident, the BWR has a Flammability Control System (FCS) to make the inside of the primary containment vessel an atmosphere of inert-gas nitrogen and to control the hydrogen concentration by recombining hydrogen generated during an accident with oxygen. However, during this accident, there was a station black out and the FCS could not be utilized.
