Q-1 Did meltdown debris go through the base of the containment vessel and reach the groundwater area ?

A: According to the results of analysis by Tokyo Electric Power Company, 100% of fuel at Unit 1 fell from the reactor vessel and ate into the concrete pedestal. The fuel stopped reacting with concrete about 65 centimeters deep, where the molten fuel remains in a cooled state. The fuel at Unit 2 and Unit 3 is also believed to have become stable at a depth of 7 – 12 centimeters and 13 – 20 centimeters, respectively. It seems fuel has not reached the groundwater area. The analysis of gas inside the containment vessels indicates that the fuel is no longer reacting with the concrete.
